Nigeria Plans Major Upgrades for Eastern Ports

The plan focuses on Nigeria’s eastern ports, which handle a significant share of the country’s external trade. Officials believe improved facilities and faster processes will make these ports more competitive and attractive to exporters seeking alternatives to oil revenue.
Infrastructure upgrades form a central part of the initiative. The authority intends to rehabilitate key facilities and install modern equipment to reduce delays that have long affected cargo movement at the ports.
Streamlining export processes is another priority. By cutting unnecessary bureaucratic steps, the NPA hopes to lower costs and speed up the time goods spend at the ports before shipment. This is particularly important for perishable and time-sensitive non-oil products that form a growing part of Nigeria’s export basket.
