Nigeria Recovers 200 Million Dollar Bond from P&ID Arbitration
The Federal Government secured the return of funds posted during an international arbitration that it ultimately won against the British firm Process and Industrial Development over a disputed gas project contract.

The Nigerian government has recovered a $200 million bond that was lodged as part of an arbitration process linked to a long-running dispute with Process and Industrial Development, known as P&ID.
The recovery was announced by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation on 22 May 2025. It follows the government's successful challenge against a $11 billion arbitration award that had been granted to the company in an earlier stage of the case.
The original dispute dates back to a 2010 contract under which P&ID was to build a gas processing facility in Nigeria. The company later claimed the government had breached the agreement by failing to supply the necessary wet gas. An arbitral tribunal in London subsequently ruled in favour of P&ID and awarded it damages of around $11 billion.
Nigerian authorities contested the award in the English courts, arguing that the contract had been obtained through bribery and corruption. In 2023 a London court set aside the arbitral award after accepting that evidence of fraud had not been available at the time of the original arbitration.
The Nigerian government has recovered a $200 million bond that was lodged as part of an arbitration process linked to a long-running dispute with Process and Industrial Development, known as P&ID.
The $200 million bond had been paid into an escrow account during the arbitration proceedings. Its return marks a concrete financial gain for Nigeria following years of legal battles that had threatened the country's public finances.
According to Nairametrics, the government is also pursuing recovery of legal costs estimated in the tens of millions of pounds. These costs were incurred across multiple jurisdictions as officials defended the case in arbitration and in court proceedings in London.
The case has been closely watched across Africa because it highlighted the potential risks that resource-rich nations face when entering complex contracts with foreign investors. It also demonstrated the capacity of national governments to overturn large arbitral awards when credible evidence of corruption emerges after the fact.
Nigeria's successful defence has been cited by other developing countries as an example of how to challenge potentially unfair investor-state dispute outcomes. The final chapter of the dispute is still being written as the pursuit of legal cost recoveries continues.
