Nigerian Minister Urges Youths to Focus on Skill Development

Nigeria's Minister for Youth Development has called on young people participating in the mandatory National Youth Service Corps programme to prioritise self-development through skills acquisition.
Ayodele Olawande made the remarks at the graduation ceremony of the Next Gen RESCO initiative, which was organised by the Rural Electrification Agency. He encouraged corps members to view their service year as an opportunity to build and enhance technical abilities that could benefit them personally in the long term.
The National Youth Service Corps, commonly known as NYSC, is a one-year mandatory programme for Nigerian graduates under the age of 30. Established after the civil war to promote national unity, it deploys young people from across the country to serve in states other than their own, often in education, health or community development roles.
Olawande emphasised the importance of shifting mindsets so that participants do not focus solely on contributing to the nation but also invest in their own growth. He highlighted the potential for corps members to acquire practical skills during their placement that could improve their future employment prospects.
