Rwanda's REG could lose coach Mugisha to Asian clubs

Rwanda Energy Group head coach Benon Mugisha is reportedly attracting interest from several clubs in Asia, with some already holding talks with the Ugandan tactician following a successful 2025/26 season.

The interest illustrates a pattern in the East African game. Coaches who deliver results in the region become targets for clubs in leagues with substantially larger budgets, and the salary differential is usually wide enough that a domestic club cannot match an offer.

For REG, the exposure is structural rather than contractual. A club that builds its identity around a coach's methods absorbs a disproportionate shock when that coach leaves: playing style, recruitment profile and youth pathway are typically aligned to one philosophy, and a successor rarely inherits all three intact.

Mugisha's nationality adds a dimension. A Ugandan working successfully in Rwandan club football reflects a regional coaching market that has become more integrated than the region's player market, where restrictions on foreign registrations still apply in most leagues.

No move has been confirmed. Reported interest at this stage of the calendar frequently does not convert, since clubs sound out multiple candidates before committing, and the coach's existing contract terms determine what any approach would cost.
