Uganda Media Group Keeps Staff Remote During Office Review

Kampala authorities and businesses continue to navigate the aftermath of disruptions that forced major media outlets to suspend operations earlier this month.

Nation Media Group Uganda has instructed its staff to maintain remote working arrangements as the company carries out assessments of its office facilities. The move follows the recent resumption of the group's television, radio, print and digital platforms.

The directive was issued to employees shortly after the media house announced the restoration of its services, according to The Independent UG. Management is examining the physical workspaces before permitting a full return to on-site duties.

Uganda's media sector has faced repeated challenges in recent years, ranging from regulatory pressures to infrastructure constraints in the capital. Nation Media Group operates some of the country's most widely followed outlets, including its flagship newspaper, broadcast channels and online properties.

The decision to prolong remote work reflects standard corporate caution when reoccupying buildings after an extended closure. It allows time for necessary checks on safety, equipment and general readiness.

Industry observers note that many Ugandan companies adopted hybrid or fully remote models during past periods of instability, a practice that has persisted in parts of the private sector. For a media organisation, uninterrupted digital output remains possible even when staff are dispersed, as demonstrated by the recent restoration of NMG's platforms.

The company has not yet indicated when it expects to conclude its office evaluations or set a date for staff to return. Employees have been told to await further communication on the matter.

This latest development occurs against a backdrop of gradual normalisation across Kampala's commercial landscape following the events that prompted the initial suspension. Media houses play a central role in shaping public discourse in Uganda, making the operational status of major groups such as NMG a point of interest for both local audiences and international partners.
