US Soybean Group Strengthens Aquaculture Ties with Nigeria
The American Soybean Association has expanded its partnership in Nigeria through a leadership programme that trained ten young professionals in modern aquaculture techniques, with support from the US Mission.
The US Mission in Nigeria participated in the graduation ceremony of the Next Gen Leaders for Aquaculture Innovation Program organised by the American Soybean Association’s World Initiative for Soy in Human Health and SejFarms Consult Limited.
Ten young Nigerian professionals selected through a competitive process completed the programme. Participants received practical exposure to contemporary methods in fish farming as part of efforts to deepen commercial links between the United States and Nigeria.
The American Soybean Association has been expanding its activities on the continent through the WISHH initiative. The programme forms part of broader efforts to support innovation in Nigeria’s aquaculture sector, which supplies an important source of protein for the country’s large and growing population.
Nigeria is one of Africa’s largest producers of fish from both capture and farmed sources. The sector nevertheless faces challenges including high feed costs and limited access to improved production technologies. Training programmes that introduce modern practices are seen as one route to improving productivity and sustainability.
