The development ends years of reliance on larger Nigerian airports for regional travel from Akwa Ibom. Residents and businesses in the Niger Delta state can now access Ghana without transiting through Lagos or Abuja.
Akwa Ibom, in Nigeria's south-south geopolitical zone, is known for its oil production and growing services sector. The state government has long pushed for upgraded air connectivity to support trade and tourism.
According to Nairametrics, the first route links Uyo directly with Ghana's capital. Ghana remains a key West African destination for Nigerian travellers and traders.
